Moses continued his prayer in Psalm 90:12 by saying, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." As Moses prayed on behalf of his people, he asked God to help them value life so that they can live wisely. One of the biggest struggles of Moses leading the people of Israel in the wilderness (desert) was that the people were very ungrateful. Although God provided the people with water, manna, and quail to eat in the wilderness, they never became satisfied but always complained about everything. As a result, God did not allow them to enter the promised land; only their children, under the leadership of Joshua, were permitted to enter. The people of Israel never appreciated life because they were too focused on themselves. Perhaps they never realized that their lives were fleeting and never learned to live the best they could in the condition that they were in. They could have been thankful that God was always with them. They could have appreciated their time with God in the wilderness, especially witnessing the miracles that God had done for them. They could have lived a better life in the wilderness if they were only thankful to God and appreciated life.
Understanding the number of our days on this earth helps us value life more. If we value life, our daily decisions will be based on how we can live well in the remaining time that we have on this earth. As a result, we will be wiser in our decisions and be more thankful. When we understand that God holds our days on this earth, we will be more careful about how we live our lives according to His will. At any moment, God can take our lives back, and we will give an account of how we live our lives before Him. So, let us be thankful and show appreciation to those we love. Let us not be too focused on our problems because they are all temporary. God will take care of us as He promised. Let us appreciate what He has given us. Let us appreciate His goodness in our lives. Let us appreciate being alive. Let us take a deep breath, relax, and be thankful.
When we are young, we think that we are invinsible, but as we get older, we realize that life is fragile. When we are healthy and strong, we feel that everything is possible, but in a split second, our life can end. May the God who loves us continue to teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) What happens when I understand that my life on this earth is temporary? What are the things that I can do to show that I value my life? How do I show my appreciation to God and others?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, please teach me to number my days so that I may gain a heart of wisdom. Thank you for all the goodness that you have shown me. Please help me not too focus on my problems because they are all temporary. They will all pass as you promise that you will take care of me. Please help me to take time to show my appreciation to those I love and care about. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
