Psalm 95:6-7 says, "Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord , our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care." The word "come" in the above verse has a different meaning than the word "come" in verse 1. Verse 1 emphasizes the invitation to praise God, but verse 6 emphasizes strong encouragement to approach God in worship. The word "worship" means to give high reverence or respect to someone who is highly esteemed. It is a picture of bowing down to someone. 1 Kings 8:54 gives us a good picture of how to approach God in worship, "When Solomon finished making these prayers and petitions to the Lord, he stood up in front of the altar of the Lord, where he had been kneeling with his hands raised toward heaven." Kneeling down and raising our hands before God is an act of surrendering to our God all we are as a profound reverence in worshipping Him. It is about submitting to God's sovereign authority and giving Him all the glory and honor.
We worship God with high reverence because He created us. God formed our bodies and breathed into our nostrils so that we became human beings. We exist because of God. He created us for His own and for His glory. God created us to have a holy and perfect relationship with Him, but when sin entered into the world, our relationship with Him was broken and lost. We became distant from God because we became self-centered. Our world became centered on us instead of God. However, when our eyes have been opened to the truth of God through our faith in our Lord Jesus, we realize our true purpose in life is to worship God. Many try to find meaning in life apart from believing in our Lord Jesus, and they end up empty and alone. But for us who find the meaning of life in believing in our Lord Jesus, we receive eternal hope.
In this Thanksgiving season, let us make time to bow down before our God and express our gratitude and worship to God for all the great things that He has done for us. Let us humble our hearts before Him and give Him all our worship adorations, for He deserves all the glory and honor.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Have I worship God in a way that He deserves? Am I willing to make time to worship God this Thanksgiving season? What are the reasons for me to worship God?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, I acknowledge that you are my God and creator. You created me for your own and for your glory. Thank you for opening my eyes to understand that my purpose in life is to worship you in everything that I do. Please continue to change my heart and teach me to worship you with my life. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
