Psalm 89:3-4 says, "You said, 'I have made a covenant (promise) with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.'" God made a promise to David that his kingship to the throne of Israel would last forever through his descendants. The last descendant of David, who became king of Judah, was Zedekiah. He died in captivity in Babylon (2 Kings 25). Since Zedekiah died, Israel never had a king from the descendant of David, not until our Lord Jesus Christ came to earth to save us from our sins through His death and resurrection. Our Lord Jesus came from the line of David (Matthew 1:1-17). God fulfilled His promise to David through our Lord Jesus. Jesus is now reigning as our King, and He will return to this earth a second time and will come as the King of the earth and will sit on the throne of the temple in Jerusalem. Philippians 2:10-11 says, "That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Seeing God fulfill His promise to David that his throne would be forever is very encouraging to all of us. It shows that God is faithful to fulfill His promise to His children, regardless of whether they are faithful or not. David committed murder and adultery by taking Bathsheba from Uriah (2 Samuel 11). David wasn't a good father to his children, especially to Absalom and Tamar, which led Absalom to rebel against him (2 Samuel 13-18). There are promises of God to us that are not based on our performance, but it is solely based on His love and grace towards us. For example, God promises us that He will complete His good work in us. Philippians 1:6 says, "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Day by day, God is working in our hearts to change us to become more like Him. God has sent the Holy Spirit to live in us to help us grow in our relationship with Him and change us to become godly people.
No matter what is going on in our lives today, let us be encouraged that God is faithful to fulfill His promises to us. Satan will never win against us because God is our protector, and our circumstances will never defeat us because God is on our side. So, let us keep on walking with confidence in God because, in the end, we will win through the power and strength of our Lord Jesus.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) How do I live my life today knowing that God is faithful to fulfill His promises to me? Are my current struggles and circumstances beyond the control and promises of God? What lesson did God show me through today's devotion?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, I am so grateful for your faithfulness in fulfilling your promises to me. Despite all my weaknesses and doubts, you are always there for me and never give up on me. Your love for me is always consistent, even when I fail you. Thank you for encouraging me today that you will remain faithful to fulfill your promises no matter what happens. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
