Psalm 94:22-23 says, "But the Lord is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The Lord our God will destroy them." In the last part of Psalm 94, the Psalmist acknowledged that the Lord is His fortress. Interestingly, the Psalmist used "Lord" to describe God as His fortress. "Lord" is one of the titles of God that shows God's supremacy over everything. He rules with supreme authority and power. The word "fortress" refers to a place that is heavily fortified or guarded from the enemies, like a Castle or a garrison. It is a picture of an impenetrable safe place. So, the Psalmist is saying that in the midst of his enemies, he is safe and secure in the fortress of the One who rules with supreme authority and power. The Psalmist continues to describe God as his mighty rock. God means Jehovah—the One who created the heavens, the earth, and everything in them (Genesis 1). The mighty rock shows that God is the strong foundation of the fortress. As a result, no one or nothing can destroy it. The Psalmist can safely hide from his enemies. In addition, God is not only a mighty fortress, but He is also a judge who will bring judgment against evil people.
There are times when we are overwhelmed by our situations and want to hide away somewhere to find safety and peace of mind. However, we do not need to hide away or run away somewhere because our fortress is always with us. Our God is our fortress in uncertainty and doubt. We do not need to look for a place to hide. We need to rest in God's presence, which is always in us. We can hide in Him by completely trusting in Him. No problem can destroy us because God is the foundation of our safe place, and He rules with supreme authority and power. We can have confidence in our adverse circumstances because God is our stronghold. He will sustain us even when we lose everything. He will carry us when we do not have the strength to take one step. As far as the evildoers, God will someday bring judgment on them.
Let us rise above discouragement when we are faced with overwhelming circumstances. Remember that we are always in God's fortress because He is always in us. Every day, we are in God's fortress. Let us walk by faith and not by sight because He always takes care of us.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Who is the fortress of my life? How can I experience God's fortress in my life? How should I live my life knowing that I am always in God's fortress?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for reminding me today that you are my fortress. Nothing can destroy me because you are the stronghold of my life. Please help me to trust in you when I am overwhelmed with my circumstances. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
